The Cost of This Job
We don't publish a flat number here because panel cost swings hard on what's actually on your garage - a single insulated section for a 9x7 door prices differently than matching one section out of a 16x7 double, and if the model's been discontinued you're sometimes looking at a full door instead of a patch. What we can tell you is the math changes with household budget expectations too: Waunakee's median household income runs well above the wider service area's, and we see more owners here opt to replace the whole door rather than chase a panel match on a 25-year-old model, simply because the newer door pays for itself in insulation and looks. That's a judgment call we'll walk through with you on site, not over the phone.
Why It Happens Here
The typical Waunakee garage door went up around 1997, newer than the service-area median of 1986, which means most of what we're pulling panels on here is steel construction from the start - not the older wood or thin-gauge steel that shows up further into Madison's older neighborhoods. Steel from that era holds up fine structurally but the bottom two panels take the brunt of it: road salt splash-back through a Wisconsin winter, a mower or trailer hitch clipping the corner, ice buildup at the bottom seal working a dent into the seam over a few seasons. This area sits in the same cold-moderate climate band as the rest of the region, so the freeze-thaw cycle that pops a bottom panel seam in January is the same mechanism everywhere - the difference here is the door underneath it is a decade newer than what you'd find deeper into Madison, so panel matching is usually more straightforward, not less.
Booking a Visit
We run out of Madison, about 7 miles south of Waunakee, so a panel job here gets scheduled the same way any other stop on that route does - we're not staffed out of a Waunakee location and won't claim otherwise. Have your door's brand, approximate age, and a photo of the damaged panel ready when you call; that's usually enough for us to bring the right stock section on the first trip instead of guessing and coming back. If you're not sure which panel is bad or whether it's worth fixing versus replacing the door, we'll look at it in person before quoting anything.
What Can Go Wrong
A panel swap that looks simple can turn up a bent track behind it, especially if the dent came from an impact rather than just corrosion - and a track that's out of true will chew through the new panel's edge within a season if it's not straightened first. On double doors, pulling one section changes the balance the spring was set for, even briefly, so we check spring tension before and after. The other thing worth knowing: if the door's old enough that the manufacturer's stopped making that panel profile, we're not going to force a mismatched section on for the sake of a quick fix - that's a full door conversation instead, and we'll say so rather than sell you a patch that won't sit flush.
