What Can Go Wrong
On the 1980s and 90s builds especially, we see torsion springs that were never upgraded from the original wind count, which means they're undersized for today's heavier insulated doors if a homeowner replaced the door panel without matching the spring. We also see galvanized cable starting to rust through at the drum where moisture sits during winter, and nylon rollers from that era gone brittle and cracking in the cold rather than wearing down gradually.
Openers from the 1986-median build years are often original or one replacement in, and the gear-and-sprocket units common to that period strip their nylon gear when a spring is already weak and the opener is doing work it shouldn't have to do. Limit switches drift out of calibration as the whole system loosens with age, which shows up as a door that reverses for no clear reason.

How It Shows Up
